Memphis East

Coming in 2017 — Babalu Memphis East, our second Memphis location! While the original Overton Square location pays homage to a bygone era in Memphis history, Memphis East has a more modern industrial personality, but with the same Babalu flair. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy the mild Southern climate on the large open air patio or pull up a chair and sip a handcrafted cocktail at the indoor/outdoor bar. It will also introduce Memphis to the chef’s table — a reservation only table that seats six and allows guests an unobscured view of the kitchen and a chance to interact with the chefs. With numerous retail and business locations within close proximity, Babalu East is sure to become a popular spot for lunch breaks, after work cocktails, family hangouts, or date night.

Jesse has been with Babalu on Overton Square as assistant manager since December 2015. We are delighted to now have him on board as general manager of Babalu East Memphis.

 

BORN AND RAISED

Jesse was born in New Haven, Connecticut, but moved with his family to Memphis when he was five — we consider him a local!

GROWING UP (IN NASHVILLE)…

Food, cooking, and shared time as a family around the dinner table were always a central component

 

BEFORE HE BECAME A CHEF?

Ben worked in the construction industry, but he had no love for the profession. It wasn’t until he ran into an old friend who was enrolled in cooking school that he discovered you could have an actual career in food. Shortly after, Ben enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu in Atlanta.

 

WHO DOES BEN LOOK UP TO PROFESSIONALLY?

While several celebrity chefs top his list of faves — Rene Redzepi, Ferran Adrià, and Ben Barber – Ben says his real admiration goes to the chefs who do the daily grind without the fame or the fortune. In particular he credits much of his cooking knowledge to Chef Rick Farmer, with whom he staged while at Le Cordon Bleu.
